Download
Download FamilyGate 0.1 (6.5 MB)
Requires macOS 14 Sonoma or later on Apple silicon or Intel. Signed with Developer ID and notarized by Apple. Open the downloaded zip to get FamilyGate.app.
SHA-256: 47a6dd5941e2051bd8915005b446beb51c68085ba58912508315d53f8a248f8e
Installing
- Open the downloaded zip and drag FamilyGate into Applications.
- Launch it. The setup assistant opens and asks to install the FamilyGate filter. Approve it in System Settings → General → Login Items & Extensions.
- Allow Local Network access when asked. FamilyGate uses it to find devices on your Wi-Fi.
Troubleshooting
- "Port 53 is in use." Another DNS service is running on this Mac (for example an older filter, Docker or a VPN client). Quit it, and FamilyGate retries automatically.
- A device isn't filtered. Open the device in FamilyGate: it shows when the device last used FamilyGate. If it never has, check its DNS setting points at your Mac's address and that Private DNS / secure DNS is off.
- Everything stopped working. Make sure the Mac is awake and on the same network. Turn on Prevent sleep in FamilyGate Settings.
- A site your child needs is blocked. Find it in Activity and choose Allow for that person or device.
Uninstalling
In FamilyGate Settings choose Uninstall Helper, quit the app and move it to the Trash. Remember to set each device's DNS back to automatic.
